More Women Come Forward with Sexual Assault Allegations Against Massage Therapist Tony Ruggiero

A total of at least eight women have now come forward with allegations of sexual assault by massage therapist Anthony “Tony” Joseph Ruggiero at Trade Street Massage in Greenville.

The 70-year-old massage therapist was arrested in September after three women contacted police concerning alleged inappropriate touching at the now-closed massage business. In the following weeks, at least five more women contacted police with similar allegations.

According to a press release from the Greenville Police Department, “The victims told investigators they purchased a discounted massage from a popular online discount site. Each woman described various types of inappropriate contact by Ruggiero during their massage session.”

These alleged sexual assaults happened between 2011 and June of 2019, according to the police.

In September, Ruggiero was charged with three counts of second-degree assault and battery. He was arrested a second time on October 15 and charged with five new counts of second-degree assault and battery.

Legal Options For Victims of Massage Therapist Sexual Assault

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a former sex crimes prosecutor who now represents sexual assault victims in civil lawsuits. Brian has represented several victims of massage therapist sexual assault. Here he is to share some of his knowledge on the legal options of those who have been sexually assaulted by massage therapists:

The massage therapy industry has widespread issues with employees sexually assaulting their customers. There have been over 200 reports of these incidents at massage therapy businesses throughout the country, including criminal charges and civil lawsuits.

Massage therapy businesses have a legal duty to ensure the safety of their customers. Protections against sexual assault are included in this legal duty. When a massage therapist is accused of sexually assaulting customers, the business should also be investigated for possible negligence.

In cases of negligence, massage therapist sexual assault victims likely have a strong case for a lawsuit against the business.
