Barren County Middle School Teacher Charged with Rape, Sexual Abuse
A teacher at Barren County Middle School in Glasgow, Kentucky has been accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old student. 27-year-old William Kyle Gardner has been charged with second-degree rape, first-degree sex abuse, and tampering with physical evidence.
Officials with the Barren County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of sexual abuse at the school on Friday, October 25 at around 1:00 p.m. After arriving, a 13-year-old female student told them that there had been sexual contact between her and Gardner.
The alleged victim was brought to the Child Advocacy Center for an interview and told interviewers that Gardner had made sexual contact with her at least five times. Gardner was interviewed at the Barren County Sheriff’s Office and deputies say he admitted to having sexual intercourse with the student on three different occasions. He also told investigators that he blocked the student on the social media app Snapchat in an attempt to hide the sexual contact.
This investigation remains ongoing.

Legal Options For School Sex Abuse Victims and Their Parents
Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com represents victims of sexual abuse in civil lawsuits against sexual predators and negligent third parties, such as schools that have failed to protect their students from being abused. Brian has some general information to share on the legal rights of school sex abuse victims and their families:
Student safety must be a top priority for every school. Protecting students from sexual predators is a big part of this responsibility, as sexual predators often seek out positions working in schools and other fields where they’ll be close to children. When a student is sexually abused by a teacher or another school employee, it’s important to investigate the accused employee and the school itself to determine if negligence allowed the abuse to occur.
Many cases of school sex abuse could have been prevented if not for negligence by the school district, such as failing to run background checks before hiring new employees. In cases of negligence, the victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit against the school district.
