Gym Lou’s Dance Instructor Charged with Raping Teen Girl

Attorney Analysis: Continue on to the second section of this article for legal analysis on the rights of gym sexual assault victims from sexual assault attorney Brian Kent.

A dance instructor at Gym Lou’s in Farmington has been arrested for allegedly raping a teenage girl at a dance studio in April 2019.

44-year-old Sudul Diahkah has been charged with a second-degree felony count of criminal sexual penetration by force or coercion. He is accused of raping a girl under the age of 18 at the Gym Lou’s dance studio at 410 W. Broadway Ave on April 14, 2019, the affidavit says.

The Farmington Police Department started an investigation on April 14, 2019, after an officer responded to a home regarding a report of a girl being raped by a dance instructor earlier that day.

A detective spoke with the girl, who said that Diahkah drove her to the dance studio earlier in the day to film a dance video. She was under the impression that other students would be there, but the two were alone.

Diahkah allegedly brought the teen to a small room in the back of the gym and raped her there.

He was arrested and released on May 7, 2020.

Legal Options For Victims of Gym Sexual Assaults

Attorney contributor Brian Kent is a former sex crimes prosecutor who now represents sexual assault victims in civil lawsuits. We’ve asked Brian to share some thoughts on the legal rights of those who have been sexually assaulted by gym employees:

Gyms should be welcoming environments where anyone can feel comfortable working out or attending classes. While most gyms cultivate this type of environment, there have also been cases of gym employees sexually harassing and assaulting customers. These victims have legal rights.

Reporting a sexual assault by a gym employee to law enforcement can result in criminal charges. Additionally, in some cases, victims may have grounds for a lawsuit against the gym for negligence. For example, a gym owner might be considered negligent for ignoring previous complaints of harassment or abuse by an employee.
