Daniel Martin, an employee of Club Legacy VBA, has been accused of child sexual abuse.

Club Legacy VBA Coach Accused of Sexual Assault of Child

50-year-old Daniel Martin of Omaha has been accused of sexually assaulting a minor in 2011. The victim just recently came forward, 6.5 years after the alleged assault. However, this type of delay is not unusual in child sexual abuse cases. Martin has been charged with third-degree sexual assault of a child. According to the criminal complaint, Martin subjected “a child 14 years of age or younger to sexual contact not causing serious personal injury.” He is currently free on $20,000 bond and has a preliminary hearing scheduled in Sarpy County Court on August 21.

Is Sexual Abuse By Coaches Common?

Unfortunately, the sad truth is that any profession which involves working with minors has the potential to attract sexual predators. While the vast majority of coaches are honorable people, a small minority are predators who use their positions of power to sexually abuse innocent children. In recent years, there have been several child sexual abuse scandals involving sports coaches and related professions, such as the Penn State scandal and the Larry Nassar Olympic doctor sexual abuse case. In more recent news, a Texas gymnastic coach was arrested and accused of sexually abusing three girls in August 2018.

Legal Options For Victims of Child Sexual Abuse

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of weighs in with his thoughts on how families affected by child sexual abuse by coaches can find answers:

Child sexual abuse affects whole families. Victims are often traumatized by the abuse for years or potentially a lifetime, and the parents and families of these victims share that trauma. Seeing the perpetrators of these crimes arrested and prosecuted may help provide a sense of justice for families, along with removing these predators from society before they can hurt others. However, families in this difficult position should know that the civil courts can help them as well.

If your child has been sexually abused by someone trusted with their care, you may have grounds for a lawsuit against a third party for negligence. For example, employers who fail to run proper background checks can be held liable if they hire someone with a history of sexual abuse
