A significant incident has unfolded in Elgin as a former Elgin ISD teacher faces serious legal charges. Turran Cortez Fennix, 34, was apprehended and charged with engaging in an improper relationship with an 8th-grade student, classified as a second-degree felony, according to KXAN.
On November 16, Fennix was taken into custody and subsequently released the following day after posting a $15,000 bond. Court documents detail that the allegations stem from a conversation between law enforcement and a juvenile who reported inappropriate behavior by Fennix. This student, also a member of Fennix’s dance team, revealed experiences of misconduct while staying overnight at the teacher’s residence.
Fennix's arrest warrant indicates that, on two occasions in the winter of 2024 and spring 2025, the victim claimed inappropriate touching occurred during sleepovers at Fennix's home, which he had arranged with parental permission. Fennix has denied any sexual misconduct but acknowledged hosting dance team members for sleepovers, during which they shared a bed.
Disturbingly, after gaining knowledge of the allegations in February 2025, Fennix did not alert school authorities, avoid further coaching interactions, or inform the victim's parents. Reports suggest that he allowed the victim to return for another sleepover even after being made aware of the situation.
Elgin ISD has reacted to these troubling allegations, confirming awareness of Fennix's arrest. The district emphasized its commitment to child safety and cooperation with law enforcement. In a statement, they noted immediate assistance provided to local police following the initial report of the investigation. Fennix resigned from his teaching role on September 5, 2025.
The district reiterated that it prioritizes the safety and well-being of its students, stating, “Accusations such as these are concerning, and if proven to be true, unacceptable.”

Medina: What steps should a victim take after experiencing such abuse?
Nigam: It's crucial for victims to document everything they remember—dates, incidents, and any witnesses. They should also speak to a trusted adult or legal professional who can guide them through the reporting process.
Medina: Are there legal protections for victims who come forward with allegations?
Nigam: Yes, Texas law has measures in place to protect victims from retaliation. It's important for them to know they are not alone and that legal resources are available to support them.
