Surveillance Footage Reveals Details of Fatal Sun Metro Explosion

Surveillance video obtained from inside the Sun Metro maintenance facility has unraveled the events surrounding the tragic explosion that claimed the lives of two workers and injured 11 others back in February, according to KFOX14. The incident occurred at approximately 1:21 p.m. at the Sun Metro facility located at 10151 Montana Ave., close to El Paso International Airport.

Investigation Findings Reveal Cause of Deadly Explosion

The fire marshal's report has identified the cause of the fire and subsequent explosions as a compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinder that was punctured by a nearby control panel for a hydraulic lift. This mechanical failure happened when a Sun Metro bus inadvertently fell off the hydraulic lift. This breach led to an uncontrolled release of flammable gas, creating a volatile environment.

The report states that mechanical friction and/or electrical current ignited the gas-air mixture, resulting in a deflagration event and multiple explosions. Authorities have ruled the incident unintentional, and the case has since been closed.

Remembering the Victims

Among those who tragically lost their lives was Ruben Ibarra, who suffered severe burns covering 83 percent of his body. After being flown to a burn center in Phoenix for treatment, Ibarra succumbed to his injuries two days following the explosion. He was just 29 years old and had joined Sun Metro in December 2024.

Also among the deceased was German Garcia, who faced a similar fate after being transported to Phoenix for care. Garcia passed away nearly a month after the incident and had also begun his tenure at Sun Metro the same month as Ibarra.

This devastating event serves as a poignant reminder of the risks associated with maintenance operations and the crucial need for safety protocols.

Legal Options for Families Affected by Gas Explosions

In the aftermath of devastating fatal gas explosions, families often face overwhelming grief and uncertainty. Many are left wondering about their legal rights and the options available to them. In this interview, we speak with Anjali Nigam, a seasoned Texas gas explosion lawyer, who shares valuable information regarding the steps families can take to seek redress after such tragic incidents, including potential avenues for compensation and the importance of legal representation.

Editor Darla Medina: What steps can families take if they have lost a loved one or have someone injured in this type of accident?

Attorney Anjali Nigam: Families should first ensure that they document everything related to the incident. This includes medical records, photographs of any injuries, and details about the explosion itself.

Medina: How important is it for families to consult a lawyer?

Nigam: It’s very important. A lawyer can help navigate the complex laws surrounding workplace safety and negligence. They can also help determine if any violations contributed to the explosion.

Medina: What kinds of compensation can families expect?

Nigam: Families may seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and emotional distress. In wrongful death cases, they can also pursue damages for funeral costs and loss of companionship.

Medina: And how can families prepare for a potential case?

Nigam: Gathering evidence is key. Families should also write down their experiences, noting any aspects that may point to negligence, such as safety protocol failures or inadequate training for staff. Consulting with a legal professional as soon as possible can ensure they take the right steps.
