Eau Claire Dance Studio Owner Charged with Sex Crimes
The owner of T4 Dance Company in Eau Claire has been arrested for the alleged sexual abuse a 13-year-old girl. 39-year-old Todd Paulus is charged with sexual assault of a child, child enticement, and child abduction.
According to arrest records, Paulus is accused of touching the victim and forcing her to touch him. On December 28 of last year, he allegedly picked the victim up from her home and she spent the night at his home, which was the basis for the child abduction charge.
The victim has told police that Paulus told her she couldn’t tell anyone about the abuse and that it was “their own little world.”
If convicted, Paulus could face up to 80 years in prison. He is out on a $10,000 signature bond and is scheduled to appear in court on February 27.
Legal Recourse for Child Sex Abuse Survivors and Their Families
Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com has spent his career helping victims of sexual assault – first as a prosecutor and now as a civil attorney. We’ve asked him to discuss the legal options available to survivors of sexual abuse committed by employees at dance studios, martial arts studios, and other businesses:
Sexual abuse causes lifelong trauma for victims and their families. When the abuse is committed by someone in a position of trust in their community, the public trust as a whole suffers. It’s critical to make sure these predators are brought to justice and that their victims are provided with the full support they deserve. Additionally, when the abuse is committed by an employee or owner of a business, it’s important to determine if the business is also liable for failing to prevent or stop the abuse.
For example, the owner of a dance studio might be held liable for sexual abuse if they hired an employee with a history of sexual misconduct, failed to report suspected abuse, or if the owner himself was the abuser.
