Dr. Kenneth Onuoha Charged with Criminal Sexual Conduct and Assault
Dr. Kenneth Onuoha has been arrested and charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct and one count of assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct for allegedly sexually assaulting one of his patients in 2016. Onuoha was also disciplined by the state medical board last year for inappropriately touching a patient.
Onuoha was the subject of a complaint filed in August 2017, in which a female patient told the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs that Onuoha gave her an “aggressive” breast exam in February of 2016. She said that Onuoha told her to take off her shirt and bra, but did not provide her with a gown.
The same patient also told officials that Onuoha pulled down her pants and underwear during an appointment for a back injury in January of 2017. LARA settled this complaint in June of 2018, with Onuoha agreeing to 5 hours of continuing education classes and a $1,500 fine.
Onuoha was criminally charged on February 1. The offense date listed in these charges is January 26, 2016. It is unclear if these criminal charges involve the same patient who filed a complaint with LARA.
Onuoha will appear in court for a preliminary hearing on March 14.
Justice for Survivors of Doctor Sexual Assault
Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a former prosecutor who now represents survivors of sexual assault in civil lawsuits. Here is some information from Brian on the legal options available to those who have survived assaults by doctors and other medical professionals:
We all expect that our doctors are trustworthy professionals who will treat us with respect and provide us with the quality of care we deserve. While most doctors are in fact trustworthy, there have also been reports of doctors sexually assaulting their patients in all 50 states. These doctors who violate their patients’ trust must be held accountable and their victims deserve justice for the trauma they’ve suffered.
In many of these cases, the victims have grounds for a lawsuit against their abuser, the facility where their abuser worked, or both parties. These crimes are an egregious violation of the public trust. Patients who are abused may deal with lifelong trauma and struggle to trust other doctors, and others in the community may also have trouble trusting medical professionals after hearing of the assault.
If you or a loved one is a survivor of sexual assault by a doctor or another medical professional, you deserve justice. Our experienced sexual assault survivors lawyers can help you understand your legal options in a free consultation.
