Zachary Mason, a 24-year-old football and weightlifting coach at Walton High, located at 449 Walton Rd, Defuniak Springs, FL 32433. Mason is now facing serious legal consequences following an investigation by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. Mason surrendered to authorities after a warrant was issued for his arrest on Friday afternoon, according to WJHG.
The inquiry began when authorities received a tip via the Fortify Florida app on Tuesday, raising concerns about a relationship between Mason and one of his students. In response to these allegations, the Walton County School District immediately suspended Mason, prioritizing student safety amid the unfolding situation.
As investigators delved deeper, they uncovered that Mason and the student had started communicating through Snapchat in December 2025. What initially appeared to be casual exchanges escalated into romantic and sexually charged conversations.
Furthermore, Mason confessed that he picked the student up in Walton County and took them to his home in Crestview, where the two engaged in sexual activity. This troubling revelation has led to his current charges.
Mason now faces charges for engaging in a romantic relationship with a student, as well as unlawful use of a two-way communication device. He was booked into the Walton County Jail and is currently awaiting his first appearance in court.
Authorities have stated that the investigation remains active, suggesting that additional charges could be filed as more information comes to light. The ongoing situation raises significant concerns within the community regarding the interactions between educators and students.

In the aftermath of disturbing allegations against Walton High coach Zachary Mason, families affected by similar situations may find themselves overwhelmed and uncertain about their next steps. To clarify the legal options available for victims of sexual abuse by a high school coach, we spoke with Michael Haggard, an experienced Florida sexual abuse lawyer. He shares valuable information on how families can navigate this difficult time and seek justice for their loved ones.
Editor Darla Medina: What options do victims have when facing sexual abuse from someone in a position of authority, like a coach?
Attorney Michael Haggard: Victims can pursue civil lawsuits against the perpetrator and potentially the school district. Under Florida law, schools have a duty to protect their students, and failure to do so can lead to liability.
Medina: What steps should a victim take if they want to report the abuse?
Haggard: They should report the incident to law enforcement and seek legal advice. It’s also important to document every detail related to the abuse, as this can support their case later.
Medina: Are there resources available for these victims?
Haggard: Absolutely. Many organizations offer counseling and legal support specifically for victims of abuse. It’s vital for them to know they aren’t alone and there is help available.
