Justice For Bar Shooting Victims and Their Families

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of CrimeVictim.Attorney represents crime victims and their families in civil lawsuits. Here are a few thoughts from Brian regarding the legal options available to bar shooting victims and their families:

When patrons visit a bar, they should be able to expect safety from preventable dangers. The owners of these establishments have a legal duty to stay aware of potential hazards that may arise, to safeguard against them, and to remove them as soon as possible. As part of this legal duty, bar owners are required to make sure their properties are reasonably secure and safe from the threat of foreseeable violent crime.

When gunfire breaks out at a bar, there are several concerns that should be addressed. The victims must get the medical care and support they need, the perpetrator must be found and prosecuted, and the bar should also be investigated to determine if security standards were up to par. In some bar shooting cases, inadequate security is partially to blame for a failure to prevent the shooting.

Establishing bar owner negligence in shooting cases is complex. Generally speaking, the victim’s lawyer will need to prove that the shooting was reasonably foreseeable and that inadequate security facilitated it. For example, if the bar had a history of other violent incidents, that shooting may be considered reasonably foreseeable.

If you or someone you love has recently become a victim of a bar shooting, you can better understand your legal options by speaking with an experienced crime victim attorney.
