Alcovy High Teacher Accused of Inappropriate Touching

A teacher at Alcovy High School has been charged with sexual assault based on allegations that he inappropriately touched students at the school.

Christopher Ehren Matyas faces two counts of sexual assault by persons with supervisory or disciplinary authority. He is accused of inappropriately touching and making inappropriate comments to two female students – one 17 and one 18 years old.

Authorities began investigating Matyas on March 22. He was arrested on Tuesday, April 16 and posted bond on Thursday.

After his arrest, the school district released a statement claiming that the school was notified about inappropriate behavior by Matyas and then began their own investigation. Following this investigation, the school says they immediately contacted law enforcement and removed Matyas from the classroom. He has since been fired.

Legal Options for Survivors of Sexual Abuse by School Employees

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of has dedicated his career to helping survivors of sexual abuse find justice. Here is Brian with some thoughts regarding the legal options available to those who have suffered abuse in the school system:

We all want to believe that our schools are safe environments, but sadly, this is not always the case. Like other fields that involve working with children, our education system has a serious problem with sexual abuse by those in positions of authority and trust. When allegations of sexual abuse arise, it’s crucial to prosecute the perpetrator, to provide the victim and other students with support, and to determine if the school was negligent.

Some cases of sexual abuse by school employees may have been prevented if it weren’t for the negligence of a school. For example, if a new employee with a history of sexual misconduct was hired because the school failed to run a background check, the school might be considered negligent. In cases of negligence, school sex abuse victims and their families may be able to find justice by filing a lawsuit against the school.

If you or someone you love has been sexually abused by a school employee, you can learn more about your family’s legal options by discussing your case with an experienced sexual abuse survivors lawyer.
