Roger Scalice, a 75-year-old pastor, was taken into custody by detectives from the Chico Police Department on October 27, following allegations of inappropriate conduct with a minor, according to Fox40. The investigation was initiated earlier in the month after a report revealed Scalice had been inappropriately touching a child with whom he had access for over a year.
Scalice now faces significant legal repercussions, with a potential sentence of up to 16 years in state prison. A judge has ordered a mental evaluation to assess Scalice's risk of reoffending and to gauge the potential danger he may present if released into the community.
Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey emphasized the seriousness of the charges, noting that the prolonged nature of the abuse led to the decision to charge Scalice with continuous sexual abuse of a child.
The next court appearance for Scalice is scheduled for January 8, 2026, at which point the results of the mental evaluation will be presented to the court.

In the wake of alarming allegations against a local pastor charged with sexual abuse, many may wonder what legal avenues are available for victims of sexual abuse. To address these concerns, we spoke with Jason Amala, an experienced sexual abuse lawyer in California, who provided valuable information on the options victims can explore to seek accountability and support.
Editor Darla Medina: What legal options do victims of sexual abuse by a pastor have in California?
Attorney Jason Amala: Victims can pursue civil lawsuits against the abuser and any institutions that may have enabled the abuse. This could include churches that failed to protect the child or cover up allegations.
Medina: Are there specific time limits for victims to take action?
Amala: Yes, in California, victims have until the age of 40 to file civil claims, but recent laws have also opened windows for older cases, allowing many to seek justice long after the initial incident.
Medina: What should a victim do if they are considering legal action?
Amala: It's crucial for them to consult with an experienced lawyer who specializes in sexual abuse cases. They can guide the victim through the process, help gather evidence, and determine the best course of action.
