Skinner West Teacher Charged with Battery After Alleged Contact with Student
Skinner West Elementary School teacher Matthew Baron has been arrested and charged with battery after a student reported that the teacher had inappropriately touched him.
The 39-year-old teacher is charged with one count of misdemeanor battery. A 12-year-old boy told his mother that Baron touched him inappropriately, putting his hand underneath the student’s shirt and touching his back.
According to the student’s mother, Baron touched and rubbed her son’s body while the class was watching a movie in a dimly lit classroom in March.
Chicago Public Schools Inspector General Nicholas Schuler is also investigating this case. Schuler’s office reviews all allegations of adults abusing students in CPS schools. He was given investigatory power last year after a Chicago Tribune article details hundreds of allegations of abuse in CPS schools.

Investigation Into Widespread Allegations of Sex Abuse in Chicago Public Schools
In 2018, the Chicago Tribune published an investigative report which revealed hundreds of allegations of sexual abuse at various schools in the Chicago Public Schools district. Since then, CPS Inspector General Nicholas Schuler has pulled at least 76 adults from CPS schools and 14 others have been fired. Another eight have retired or resigned. Roughly half of those pulled from schools are teachers, while the rest include bus drivers, teacher’s assistants, security guards, and vendors.
Legal Options For School Sex Abuse Victims and Their Families
At Wagner Reese, our sex abuse survivors lawyers represent survivors in lawsuits against their abusers and third parties who had a responsibility to prevent or stop the abuse but failed to do so. Here is some general information on the legal options available to families affected by sexual abuse in schools:
Our school should be safe and enriching environments, but sadly, this is not always the case. Education and other fields that involve working with children are often targeted by sexual predators. School administrators must be aware of this and do everything they can to keep predators out of their schools. But sadly, sexual abuse has become a major problem in schools across the country.
Many cases of school employee sex abuse are preventable and only occur due to negligence by the school district. For example, a school district might be considered negligent if they hired an employee who had a history of sexual misconduct because the school didn’t run a thorough background check. In cases of negligence, the victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit.
If you or your child is a victim of sexual abuse by a teacher, coach, or another school employee, it’s important to be aware of your family’s legal options. You can learn more by speaking with one of our experienced sex abuse victims lawyers in a free consultation.
