Legal Recourse for Victims of Sexual Abuse by Medical Professionals
Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com has helped sexual assault survivors find justice in both criminal and civil courts – first as a sex crimes prosecutor, and now as a civil attorney. We’ve asked him to share some insight into the legal options available to those who have been sexually abused by medical professionals:
Doctors and other medical professionals who abuse their patients don’t only traumatize their victims – they damage the public trust as a whole. These professionals are some of the most trusted members of our communities, and a minority of these professionals exploit this trust in order to commit heinous crimes. We must make sure that these predators are held criminally responsible, that their victims get the full support they need, and that the facilities who fail to prevent abuse through negligence are also held accountable.
In many cases of sexual abuse involving medical professionals, the victims have grounds for a lawsuit against their abuser and/or their abuser’s employer. For example, a medical facility might be considered liable for abuse for negligence like failing to report previous allegations of sexual misconduct to law enforcement, allowing a doctor to continue practicing after being reported, and failing to run a background check before hiring a new employee.
If you or a loved one is a survivor of sexual abuse by a doctor or another medical professional, you can find justice for the difficulties your family has gone through. Consider speaking to one of our experienced sex abuse survivors lawyers to learn more about your family’s legal options.
