Battle Ground Massage Therapist Charged with Rape, Indecent Liberties
A licensed massage therapist who until recently worked at Opdahl Chiropractic and Massage has been charged with sexually assaulting two women during massages at the business. 47-year-old Eddie Anzalone was arrested on Monday and faces charges of Rape II and Indecent Liberties.
Two women have come forward and said that Anzalone “touched too much” during a massage treatment at Opdahl in February. The women reported this incident to the facility and Anzalone was fired. He is now in jail on charges of second-degree rape and indecent liberties.
Police began investigating the allegations earlier this month and decided to charge Anzalone for allegedly touching the women in a sexual manner.
Battle Ground police have encouraged other victims and anyone else with information related to this case to contact them at 360-342-5241.
Legal Recourse for Survivors of Massage Therapist Sexual Assault
Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a sexual assault survivors lawyer who has helped multiple women file lawsuits against nationwide chain Massage Envy for sexual assault by massage therapists. He’s offered to share some thoughts on how people in this situation can find justice through the legal system:
The nature of massage therapy requires trust between therapists and their clients, as these two parties are alone together while the client is in a vulnerable position. Unfortunately, this field is often targeted by sexual predators who exploit their positions of trust in order to abuse their clients. There have been reported incidents of massage therapist sexual assault across the United States, and many survivors have been fighting back by filing lawsuits against major companies like Massage Envy and Hand & Stone Massage, along with smaller businesses as well.
The owners of massage businesses have a legal duty to make sure their clients are safe from the threat of sexual abuse. All employees must be subject to thorough background checks and any allegations of sexual misconduct must be taken seriously. But in some cases, including many involving Massage Envy, these facilities have even attempted to cover up assaults, including allowing accused employees to work at other locations.
If you or a loved one is a survivor of sexual assault by a massage therapist, you have ways to find justice. Taking legal action can help demand accountability from the facility that failed to keep their customers safe and provide you with financial compensation for the trauma you’ve suffered.
