Former Banks High School Assistant Coach Arrested on Sex Abuse Charges

A former volunteer assistant softball coach at Banks High School has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a student. 22-year-old Madison Loper has been charged with using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct, first-degree online sexual corruption of a minor, luring a minor, and two counts of sex abuse.

Soper is also a former student-athlete at Banks High School, where she played softball as an all-state catcher. She coached at the school during the 2016-17 school year.

Detectives searched Soper’s home on December 2 as part of their investigation into “an inappropriate relationship between an adult and a minor.”

Police believe there could be other victims out there because of how many students she coached. Anyone with information related to this case is asked to call detectives at 503-846-2500.

Legal Options For Victims of Sexual Abuse by Coaches

Former sex crimes prosecutor Brian Kent now represents sex abuse victims and their families as a civil attorney and is a founding partner of AbuseGuardian.com. We’ve asked Brian to share some of his knowledge on the legal options available to victims of sex abuse by coaches, teachers, and other school personnel:

Sexual abuse in schools is an epidemic, as there are regularly reports of teachers, coaches, and other school employees and volunteers sexually abusing students. School officials must take this epidemic seriously and have adequate safeguards in place for minimizing the risk of sexual abuse.

Some of these cases only occur due to school negligence. For example, a school could be considered negligent for failing to address previous complaints of sexual misconduct or inappropriate behavior by a coach who was later charged with sexually abusing students. In cases of negligence, the victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit against the school.

If you or a loved one has been sexually abused by a youth sports coach, our sex abuse victims attorneys understand the difficulties your family is facing and we are prepared to help. You can learn more about your legal rights in a free consultation.
