ABM Janitorial Services Supervisor Arrested For Sexually Assaulting Employee
A supervisor with ABM janitorial services at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has been arrested after a fellow employee accused him of sexually assaulting her in a storage closet at the airport. The victim told Atlanta police that 47-year-old Eddie Sanders made inappropriate sexual comments towards her in the airport atrium before forcing her into the storage closet and raping her.
The victim immediately reported the incident to police, with a timestamp of 6:15 a.m. on the police report. ABM immediately suspended Sanders and released a statement saying that they are fully cooperating with authorities.
During a bond hearing in Clayton County on Wednesday, a judge denied bond for Sanders.
Legal Recourse For Survivors of Workplace Sexual Assault
Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com helps survivors of sexual violence tell their stories and find the justice they deserve. We’ve asked him to discuss the legal rights of those who have been sexually assaulted in the workplace:
Workplace sexual harassment, misconduct, and even assault have been widespread problems for a long time. While the #MeToo movement may be opening eyes to these problems, countless women and men in the workplace are still victimized by sexual harassment and sexual violence. When someone is sexually assaulted on the job, it’s important to hold accountable both the perpetrator and, in cases of negligence, the employers who failed to keep their employees safe.
While some cases of workplace sexual assault are random, many are the result of employer negligence. Examples of such negligence include failing to run a background check which would have revealed that the perpetrator had a history of sexual violence or failing to discipline or fire an employee who had sexually harassed other employees in the past.
If you’ve been sexually assaulted or harassed in the workplace, you should know that the civil court system can help. By filing a lawsuit against your employer, you can demand accountability from them, along with securing financial compensation for damages related to the trauma you’ve suffered.
