Atlanta High School Band Director Charged with Sexual Assault

A band director at an all-girls high school in Atlanta has been arrested and charged with sexual assault by a teacher. He is accused of having sex with a student several times both on and off-campus.

35-year-old Jovan Burton faces a charge of felony sexual assault for the alleged incidents at Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy. He resigned from the school on Monday, February 25.

According to court documents, a student told police that she and Burton had sex at least six times inside of the school and in Burton’s vehicle. The girl said these incidents happened in the band room, the practice band room, and the custodian’s restroom.

Burton was denied bond during a court hearing on Tuesday, February 26. He is scheduled to appear in court again on March 12.

Justice for Survivors of Sexual Abuse by School Employees

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a former prosecutor who now represents survivors of sexual abuse in civil lawsuits. Here are some of Brian’s thoughts on how survivors of school employee sexual abuse can find justice through the legal system:

Every parent deserves the security of knowing their child will be safe at school. But unfortunately, a look over national news will show regular instances of school employees being arrested for sexually abusing their students. Sexual predators often seek out positions in fields like education, where they will have trust and authority and regularly be in contact with students. Our schools must be aware of the dangers of sexual predators and do all that they can to protect their students.

When a school fails to keep their students safe from sexual predators, the victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit. For example, a school might be considered negligent and held liable for sexual abuse if they failed to respond to previous allegations of sexual misconduct involving an employee. Another example would be failing to run a background check and hiring an employee with a history of sexual misconduct.

If your child has come forward to tell you about sexual abuse by a school employee, we understand how painful this ordeal has been for your family and we want to help you find justice.
