Several Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Dr. Robert E. Anderson Spanning Decades
At least five former patients have accused late University of Michigan physician Dr. Robert E. Anderson of sexual abuse, with the allegations spanning several decades.
A spokesman for the university has admitted that some University of Michigan employees were aware of allegations against Anderson before a 2018 complaint and police investigation.
According to spokesman Rick Fitzgerald, “It is our understanding from the police investigation that there were rumors and some indication that U-M staff members were aware of Dr. Anderson’s inappropriate medical exams.”
An Associated Press article says that 69-year-old Robert Julian Stone told the publication that Anderson sexually assaulted him during an appointment at the University Health Center in 1971. Stone reported this allegation to university officials last summer.
Anderson formerly served as the director of the University Health Service and was also a team doctor for several sports at Michigan from 1966 until he retired in 2003. He was the football team’s doctor for over three decades.
Anderson died in 2008. The University of Michigan has set up a hotline for other possible victims who wish to come forward.

Legal Recourse For Victims of Sexual Abuse by Doctors
Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a former sex crimes prosecutor who represents sexual assault victims in civil lawsuits. Brian has offered to add some information on the legal rights of doctor sexual abuse victims:
Doctors are trusted to care for their patients and treat them with respect. Most doctors honor this trust, but sadly, there have also been many cases of doctors sexually abusing their patients. Several major universities have been rocked with allegations of sexual abuse against prominent doctors – such as Michigan State University and USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.
In cases of sexual assault involving university doctors, it’s important to determine if the university was at fault for failing to prevent or stop the abuse of students. Some of these cases only happen due to negligence by a university – such as failing to investigate or report allegations of inappropriate behavior or sexual misconduct by the doctor. When negligence is involved, survivors may have grounds for a lawsuit against the university.
