Police in Montgomery County have arrested a Latin teacher from Abington Senior High School based on allegations of inappropriate sexual contact with a student at the school. 55-year-old Thomas Kummer has been charged with five felonies, including corruption of minors, unlawful contact with a minor, photographing, filming, or depicting a sexual act on a computer, endangering the welfare of a child, and institutional sexual assault of a minor.
Kummer was arraigned on Monday morning, October 1 and is being held on $250,000 cash bail.
According to court documents, the offenses occurred in May of this year. No further details regarding the circumstances of the abuse are available at this time.

Legal Recourse For Survivors of Sexual Abuse by Teachers
Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com represents survivors of sexual violence in civil lawsuits. As an attorney contributor, he’s offered to add some thoughts on how families can find justice when a child is sexually abused by a teacher:
While we’d all like to believe that the teachers and other school professionals in our communities are all trustworthy people, the tragic reality is that some school employees are predators who use their positions of trust to abuse students. This is no secret, as headlines involving sexual misconduct and assault between teachers and students routinely make headlines in both local and national news.
When a teacher or another school employee sexually abuses a student, it’s important for the victim and their family to be aware of their legal options. The criminal justice system will handle the prosecution of the offender, but the civil court system can also help victims by demanding accountability from the school district if their negligence failed to keep students safe from abuse. Additionally, filing a lawsuit in civil court can help provide financial compensation for damages suffered as a result of the abuse.
